Here's some drawings to show how the Cap'n developed.

Originally he was quite fresh faced, and looked a little like a train driver -

A bit of tweaking here and there filled him out a bit -

The addition of a big beard finished the look off -

Dragons Blood Pirates character designs - Hatchette Australia

Posted by roryroryrory at 09:31 0 comments
Before starting work on a book I spend ages creating the characters. Dragon's Blood Pirates have quite a large cast of main players, all of which had to be designed and approved, and most importantly notably different from each other.

Vampire Zu and Flash Johnny. Zu is a particularly fun character to draw.

Snotty Nell - one of the main baddies.

Mozzy and Slicer, a couple of good pirates.

Gunner - Captain of the good pirates.

Blacktooth McGee - Captain of one of the baddy factions.

Second Hand Stevie - McGraw-Hill Australia - Character designs and Cover

Posted by roryroryrory at 07:56 0 comments
Occasionally I get involved in a project that looks like it's going to be a winner, but for whatever reason falls flat on its face after getting off to a good start. "Second Hand Stevie" was just such a project. I got the text for the first of several books about a young chap called Stevie who organises brick-a-brack events and recycles things, spent ages doing the character designs, doing page roughs, and designing the cover, when it all suddenly got cancelled. Oh well, such is life.

Here's some character design sheets, you can see how they start off and how they develop into real people.

And here's the cover rough, full of the excitement of a second hand sale!

This is a rough mock up I did of the cover so that the publisher could see how it could look.
